International Girls in ICT Day is a chance to drive change

In the lead up to International Girls in ICT Day (25 April), Huawei shifted the spotlight to the persistent challenges women face within the technology sector in South Africa. With a staggering 50% of women leaving tech roles by age 35, and black women CEOs earning significantly less than white males, the need for change is urgent. The company’s recent roundtable highlighted the ongoing inequities while celebrating a promising new generation of women ready to break barriers.

These young graduates, all in their early 20s, are entering an industry where their careers could be cut short due to systemic challenges. This mirrors a troubling historical trend: talented women in tech often see their careers plateau prematurely.
