Sports Illustrated to close It's always sad news when magazines close, in this case, it's Sports Illustrated, as reported by Gill Moodie in a Bizcommunity.com exclusive. The magazine is the latest in a series of publications that have been closed, with the tough trading conditions and intense competition from other media - and publications - taking their toll. To the staff, our best wishes. Janine Lazarus takes a look at dirty words, namely "Nkandlagate", "Zumaville" and "compound" and an advert that was banned even before being flighted. As Lazarus writes: "For our public broadcaster to first determine what words and phrases are acceptable - or not as in the reportage on the presidential palace - and then to ban an advert before it was even flighted, smacks of nothing more or less than blatant, inexcusable censorship." Tourism is a major industry and a massive earner of foreign exchange, but the temptation to try to get an extra few rands out of foreign tourists is pretty common. Which is why Chris Moerdyk asks: Is SA being priced out of the tourist market? On a lighter note, Lex Faure takes a look at smartphones as they surpass the billion mark, and has a number of interesting things to say about them. Finally, find out more about digital signage in the South African market with our [Biz Takeouts Podcast] 47: In-store digital signage solutions. Rod Baker: Content DirectorPS Take a look at the latest Ornico ad showcase. Responses to this column welcomed in our ed's column archive. There is a ban on free news media photography at the Lady Gaga Concerts in Johannesburg and Cape Town, with the organisers only making available selected publicity photographs. The South African National Editors' Forum (Sanef) notes its concern at such a decision, which it regards as a form of press censorship, fundamentally in conflict with the constitutionally guaranteed freedom of media in South Africa. [Chris Moerdyk] In the past, one of the big selling points about South Africa was that it was an inexpensive destination for foreign tourists. But nowadays, even with the rand having weakened like an overweight paunch-drunk boxer to worse than R9 to the US dollar, the country is getting a reputation for being a very expensive place to visit. [Matt Rose] Leo Burnett is pioneering a new approach to shopper marketing that pays attention to extending the shopper journey both pre- and post-purchase. The SABC has expressed its concern regarding The Star newspapers' headline "SABC bans Zuma Advert", published on 27 November 2012. [Tyrone Middleton] In the past, marketers have stressed the importance of brand visibility. The argument has been that having your brand visible in all the right places is important, even without interaction with customers. Unfortunately, living in a world where consumers see and hear an average of 3000 marketing messages a day, there is simply too much clutter out there to stand out from the crowd. Read more >>
