×Beverley Parr
I have an enormous amount of work experience. As designer I can interpret a brief and sell a concept to the client. As Editor and publisher I've worked with journalists and designers, interviewed and written many articles. On the sales side I have written many proposals and marketing plans. I have flirted with television and have a sound knowledge of it. I love the world of publishing, its always changing and moving and new - it's who I am.
Show profile Hide profileI had my own graphic design and DTP business from 1992 - 2005. The company produced a wide range of promotional, corporate and educational material for Soul City, Avusa Media (formally Johncom), Department of Education, Department of Health, Department of Public Works, Johannesburg Water (designed the logo and corporate identity), Computer Configurations and many others.
Over the years I have specialised in magazine work and have extensive experience in material development including writing, editing, layout and design.
From 2008 - 2011, I was editor and owner of Platinum Living magazine - a lifestyle magazine for the North West Province and also produced, designed and edited Heritage Magazine for the North West Parks and Tourism Board. The aim of both publications was to promote the North West Province in all her unexpected glory. Platinum Living was distributed in CNA's countrywide, Spar stores in NW and was available in all the rooms at Sun City, Peermont hotels in the North West and on all outgoing Emirates flights.
I have many years experience in:
interpreting a brief, conceptualising, design and layout;
magazine journalism;
the ability to generate ideas for stories and plan, conduct interviews and research a subject and story;
writing and editing stories - keeping to the publication's house style;
ensuring that work is well written, accurate and submitted to deadline;
liaising with other journalists and working as a team;
working under pressure, sticking to deadlines with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Expert in QuarkXpress, InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop on Apple Macs.
I studied Journalism for three years (specialising in magazine layout and design) at Rhodes University (1982-1985) although I didn't finish my degree. I chose instead to travel, spending at least four years in San Francisco where I fell in love with my first Mac Classic and started my Design and DTP business.
