Charity cycle tour to hand over R150k to Cape Town charities
In total, the tour will raise over R500,000 for various charities supported by Sun City Resort, the Flamingo Casino in Kimberley, the Golden Valley Casino in Worcester, and at the Table Bay Hotel.
The cyclists will not only donate money and products to charity organisations, but will also support the World Bicycle Relief Organisation and promote the sport of cycling by donating bicycles to previously disadvantaged individuals en route, and of course also participating in the Cape Town Cycle Tour before commencing the journey back to Sun City.
The tour has donated approximately R6.5m to various charities
Over the past 12 years, the tour has donated approximately R6.5 million to various charity organisations. These include amongst others CANSA, The Sun City AIDS Orphanage Housing Project, Sinothando Children's Home, the Deaf Institute, Moira's House, Grace Centre for abused Woman and Children, Nazareth House, and the Saartjie Baardman Centre for Abused Woman and Children.
"The Table Bay is proud to support Sun City to The Table Bay Charity Cycle Tour and we look forward to hosting the cyclists at the end of their trek from the North West to the Western Cape," says Sarah Prins, the Public Relations Manager at The Table Bay.
The tour boasts a diverse mix of cyclists of all ages, and from different countries. In this year's race, riders from Germany and Dubai will take part. Amongst them is Reiner Stolz, a 72 year old from Moosburg Germany, who is participating in the Charity Cycle Tour for the 11th time. This year, however, he will only be doing part of the route on a tandem. The oldest female and male cyclists riding the entire distance are both turning 62 this year.
To show her support, Miss SA Ziphozakhe Zokufa will be joining the team and might cycle some of the route with the team.
It takes a lot of commitment, dedication and effort to prepare for an endurance event of this magnitude. Training and preparation started in July last year, as without the necessary preparation, the cyclists would not be able to complete the event. It is not a relay and riders are expected to cycle approximately 220km per day.
"We wish them luck and plenty of strength on their journey," concludes Prins.
