80 000 new jobs, 420 000 still needed
South Africa created 80 000 jobs in January but Business Day warns that the economy was still 420 000 jobs short of the peak employment levels reached before the 2009 global financial recession.
The figures, from Adcorp's Employment Index show that all sectors of the economy reported good gains in employment with temporary work increasing by 7% and agency work rising by 8%.
The index estimates that 3,87 million people are employed in temporary positions and this is equivalent to 30,1% of the total workforce. It says the wholesale and retail trade grew by almost 14% while the transport and logistics sector was up by 9%.
Business Live says the index shows that while all occupational categories reported growth, the highly-skilled categories of management and professionals was strongest at 4,7%.
