Training authorities riddled with corruption

According to a Business Day report, of the 21 Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) only six received a clean audit report from the Auditor-General Terence Nombembe and his findings question the SETA system that has been plagued by corruption, mismanagement and maladministration for years.

Labour analysts say the effectiveness of SETAs on South Africa's training and economic growth has been minimal. Jan van Schalkwyk, corporate executive in the Auditor-General's office warns that the latest report reflects very badly on the management of the SETAs, adding that it's findings are probably "just the tip of the iceberg," Business Day reports.

According to the Business Day report, nine cases of fraud were being investigated at several different SETAs last year. Earlier this month, Minister of Higher Education and Training, Blade Nzimande said the quality of training offered by SETAs meant that taxpayers were "frankly being ripped off".
