The Henrike Grohs Art Award is a roving biennial art prize conceived by the Goethe-Institut and the Grohs family in memory of the former head of Goethe-Institut in Abidjan, Henrike Grohs. The prize is awarded biennially to an artist or arts collective living and working on the African continent, and practising in the field of visual arts.
Applications to the 3rd Henrike Grohs Art Award closed on 17 September 2021. Over 260 applications were received from 31 countries across the continent.
The selection committee, made up of Devin Hentz (independent researcher and writer from Dakar, Senegal), Patrick Mudekereza (director at Centre d’Art Waza, Lubumbashi from Democratic Republic of Congo), Rafael Mouzinho (assistant curator at the Colecção de Arte/Galeria of the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane from Maputo, Mozambique) and Teesa Bahana (director 32° East Ugandan Arts Trust from Kampala, Uganda), selected the following 22 artists for the shortlist:
The main prize will be selected by an international jury with the announcement being made online in 2022. The winning artist will receive a cash prize of €20,000 and €10,000 towards the publication of their work. Two artists will be selected as runners up and will receive a cash prize of €5,000each.
