Marketing & Media South Africa

A gift to help the medicine go down

Apparently, Madiba's grandson reckons that the news that Iqbal Survé's Sekunjalo consortium has bought Ireland's Independent News and Media South African interests is just the gift Madiba needs.

Must say, I'm not 100% certain of that... surely plenty of rest and freedom from constant visitors (plus whatever medication he may or may not be on) would be of greater benefit?

On the PR front, Lucinda Boddy makes the plea: Will the real face of PR please stand up? Lucinda reckons the PR industry, like any, is facing challenges, so the genuine players need to stand up and be counted.

Advertising... love it or hate it, or merely tolerate it; Colin Ramparsadh dishes up his latest bland and the spicy ads and, just as Frank Sinatra did it, Colin also does it MiWay.

Prof Anton Harber says he's reminded by the Taco Kuiper Award winners of how good the best of SA journalism is.

Fancy a double? Not if our increasingly nanny state has its way, because apparently, they reckon that if you ban or curtail liquor advertising, you will reduce drinking. Some people disagree however, and reckon the new laws on alcohol won't reduce drinking.

Anyone remember Prohibition? Anyone seen adverts promoting drug abuse? Woman abuse? Child abuse? Promoting reckless driving? Speeding? Social ills of whatever sort?

Nope, nor have we. Legislating against something doesn't necessarily stop it.
