Focusing on facts and figures

Earlier this year blogger Shaun Dewberry caused a shit storm of note for the online radio industry when he published research that accused, among others, 2oceansVibe Radio of reporting inflated listenership figures. Since then, 2oceans has ditched its previous stats provider and taken on a more restrained method in caluculating and reporting listenership figures. Mr 2oceansVibe himself, Seth Rotherham, explains the online radio station's new listenership pricing model.

Keen to find out all about Y&R South Africa? Rowena Fester, Y&R Cape Town's business unit director, hangs out with Biz Takeouts radio show host Warren Harding at the 2oceansVibe Radio studio for [Biz Takeouts Podcast] 46: Agency focus - Y&R Advertising. Find out how the company measures return on investment for clients and how it's planning to ensure that 2013 is a successful year.

Athar Naser is on a mission to help you get your head around content marketing. In previous pieces, he's covered content marketing, content analysis and content marketing vs SEO; this week Naser looks at how social media campaigns and content marketing campaigns can and should coexist. Are you using social media as a conduit for your targeted content?

Independent insight consultant and trend analyst Saint-Francis Tohlang is intrigued with what he calls "The curious case of Alcatel". Examining the brand's re-emergence, re-discovery and repositioning, he seems to envision Alcatel One Touch rising from the "near ashes", revitalised in 2013.

And with 2013 just around the corner, we don't have much longer to wait and see... Hou vas, we're almost there!

Secrecy Bill closer to becoming Secrecy Law
On 21 November 2012 members of the NCOP ad hoc committee voted to finalise a Bill that, according to Right2Know, still carries the fingerprints of the securocrats who have remained the 'hidden hand' behind this process from the start. The ANC used its numerical majority to force the Secrecy Bill one step closer to becoming a Secrecy Law. Read more >>

The buzz around brand journalism

The craft of simplification
[Glen Meier] We all know the term 'less is more', but in a busy and complex world it is often forgotten. For a brand to say more and have optimal impact it needs to say less, less grey, less of the same, and more difference, more relevance. Simple doesn't mean easy though, and that's where the craft comes in. The craft of simplification. Read more >>

Unthink lately?
[Maria Berrios-Carter] There is a well-known creative condition called "analysis paralysis". Fuelled by our incessant hunger for information and meaning, we have created a society too focused on the thinking and less so on the doing, overanalysing ourselves into a full stop. And the only way to move passed the stupefying white page staring back at you is to practice the art of Unthink. Read more >>

Creating strong brand memory maps
[John Laurence] The brain is found to be far more "plastic" than previously thought, able to rewire itself after damage from a stroke or to strengthen neural connections or "maps" when learning, like memorising the dialogue of a play or learning to play the guitar. Brands map themselves in memory structures in a similar manner at various quality and quantity levels. Read more >>

The curious case of Alcatel
[Saint-Francis Tohlang] Ever wondered what happened to Alcatel mobile phones? Once upon a time the "Rolls Royce" of cellulars in the peak of the cellphone boom, the brand somewhat waned into obscurity. Now it seems to have re-emerged to boldly claim a stake in the smartphone market and 2013 is the year touted for this bold dynamic play to take full effect. Let us unpack the curious business case of the Alcatel brand and its journey of rediscovery and brand repositioning. Read more >>

Iconic brands tell stories
[Thomas Oosthuizen] We all recognise them, we all love them and we all want them. Yet iconic brands are rare. An iconic brand is able to punch far above its weight. Most iconic brands do not spend a fortune on marketing - they attain gravity naturally as consumers tune into them. Whatever they do creates impact way beyond their magnitude. (video) Read more >>

Missing link between skills development, increased performance
[Deirdre Elphick-Moore] Skills development is still a major focus in South Africa. Businesses are incentivised to implement clearly defined skills development programmes. Although businesses can see almost immediate benefits through tax and skills levy rebates and better B-BBEE scores; are these programmes positively affecting the performance of employees and the organisations they work for? Employees - brand champions of organisations
[Zimkhitha Mqutheni] Focusing on employee-centric strategy before being client-centric should be the key of every organisation's success.
