Why some ads work better than others do We've got some interesting research - believed to be a first - for you from UCLA. Researchers have found that when it comes to which ads are winners your brain knows better than you do. Neuroscientists at the university used brain data to predict how large populations will respond to advertisements. Closer to home M&C Saatchi Abel Cape Town has won the MWeb account having also recently been awarded the most of the Nedbank Group's below-the-line business. It's sad, but true, that one of the world's most dangerous professions is not necessarily at the sharp of an army or police service (though both are often dangerous, naturally) but rather on the blunt end of a laptop or camera... namely... journalism. Many journalists have been killed; take for example the death of Anton Hammerl. So, in an effort to help journalists protect themselves and their sources, the Committee to Protect Journalists has launched it's Journalist Security Guide. That makes it particularly appropriate that we should all, during this Freedom Week support press freedom. The Right2Know campaign has called on society to mark 27 April (Freedom Day), 1 May (Worker's Day) and 3 May (World Press Freedom Day), as opportunities to recognise and celebrate hard-fought battles and hard-won victories in the struggle to realise these rights and to reflect on the challenges that lie ahead. Finally, on a happier front - DIY (in which women often excel, believe me, I know) - sees Marianne Malone being appointed editor of EasyDIY - the quarterly magazine aimed at people interested in DIY but put off by complicated ideas and projects. Enjoy tomorrow; we'll be back on Wednesday. Rod Baker, Content DirectorResponses to this column welcomed in our editor's column archive. [Herman Manson: @marklives] How wonderful that, in South Africa's high-volume politics, the chance to step back from the abyss still presents itself. The Press Freedom Commission report on media regulation seems to have created an opportunity for politicians to jump the puddle that would have sucked them and the rest of us down an acrimonious path to the Constitutional Court and a bareknuckle fight on our hard-fought right to know (the truth - and not just Jimmy Manyi's). [Greg Nicolson] South African brands are prickly when it comes to comparative advertising. Yet a battle of the spoofs between insurance company Santam and fast food chain Nando's has greatly benefited both brands. Maybe there's a moral lurking there somewhere. [video] Read more >>

[Edward Fisher] Nando's has always been agile and, as technology enhances the turnarounds on production time, it has become even better at flighting ads in the immediate wake of the people and events that it satirises. [Anton Crone] Have you seen any good motorcycle or bicycle advertising lately? If the golden pencil is your carrot and you want to be a part of something significant, here's an opportunity. The notion of branding is usually one concerning giants. As the leviathans of big business tussle for optimum visibility in the market - with all of their arrogance, pomp and grandeur - it may seem that branding and any marketing and management therein, could never apply to the small business spectrum.
