Andrew Human bows out after seven years So the unexpected local news of the moment is that Andrew Human has decided to exit on a high note and step down as CEO of the Loeries after seven years, although his organising expertise will not be totally lost. Bizcommunity.com looks forward to a more media-savvy Loeries CEO. Talking about Loeries, there's been an interesting thread of discussion running on Bizcommunity since last Monday, starting with Mike Abel lamenting that there were no TV ads at Loeries this year which took his breath away and wondering what has happened to those wonderful big brand ads from yesteryear, followed by Chris Moerdyk commenting that great advertising requires real talent, and that we shouldn't allow university degrees to be barriers to advertising and journalism, and then Anton Crone tackling the lack of African and South African identity in our creative work. Most thought-provoking. With the death of Steve Jobs last week, various people and organisations have paid tribute to his extraordinary talents and his far-reaching impact in various spheres, including design, marketing and advertising, media, technology/R&D and public speaking and presenting. This week, look out for Biz bloggers Johanna McDowell, who's currently in New York City for the latest AdForum Worldwide Summit, and the three-person team from New Media attending the 38th FIPP World Magazine Congress in New Delhi, India. Entries for The Bookmarks, which recognises excellence in digital publishing, advertising and marketing, also close on Saturday, 15 October 2011, so make sure you get yours in pronto! Here's to 'thinking different' Simone Puterman ( @SimoneBiz) Managing editorPS In case you're wondering what's been happening with the Bizcommunity/Chai FM Media & Marketing radio show this month, since Chai FM is a Jewish community radio station, there are some weeks in which there are no shows as the station is closed for the Jewish high holy days, and some weeks where various personnel are away and we're running 'Best of Biz Takeouts'. We'll return fresh and revitalised in November! Responses to this column welcomed in our editor's column archive. [Chris Moerdyk: @chrismoerdyk] Look closely at the marketing strategies used by Steve Jobs and other visionaries and the first thing that comes to mind is the realisation that marketing is not a democratic process and that those who are really successful at it are, yes, visionaries. Read more >>

[Walter Pike] If you visit apple.com today, Thursday, 6 October 2011, you will be greeted with a black and white picture with the title "Steve Jobs (1955 -2011)" - a simple elegant tribute to a legend, a master marketer who understood that the brand is built by the customers' experience and by what they tell their friends. [Anton Crone] Too often, as marketers and creatives, we wait for some justification of talent, some confirmation of a sure-fire winner, and most often we look to the West - for inspiration, for a formula. [Chris Moerdyk: @chrismoerdyk] A couple of days ago here on Bizcommunity, one of South Africa's leading admen, Mike Abel, reflected on all the TVC that were entered into this year's Loeries, saying that nothing stood out for him. He yearned for the days of yore, when this country produced outstanding TV advertising. "The product that will not sell without advertising will not sell profitably with advertising. (via Direct Creative)" - Albert Lasker "Never forget that if you don't hit a newspaper reader between the eyes with your first sentence, there is no need of writing a second one. (via 1001 quotes)" - Arthur Brisbane "Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square hole. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do. (via goodreads)" - Apple Computer Inc. "It is difficult, but not impossible, to conduct strictly honest business. (via Directory Journal)" - Mahatma Gandhi "The real fact of the matter is that nobody reads ads. People read what interests them, and sometimes it's an ad. (via Direct Creative)" - Howard Luck Gossage
