Media matters

It seems the issue of media ownership is one that won't go away. Proponents of diversity in media ownership maintain that without it, media ownership will continue to fail to drive diversity in content.

On a sadder note, will Femina fold? So far Media24 management maintains no decision has been taken, while insiders (and some outsiders) seem to reckon it's only a matter of time. The question of course is this: are Femina's woes symptomatic of a wore widespread malaise? Are other South African magazines in trouble, and is Femina just the first (this year)?

OK, enough of that, now for some good news! What a refreshing departure from what is too often the norm... Instead of threatening Yuppiechef with legal action, hanging, drawing and quartering, life behind bars, and all the rest of it - which is too often what big business does in this country when it comes to certain issues - Woolworths responded in kind to Yuppiechef holding its Lovebird to ransom. It responded with humour, and a bigger than “demanded” donation for Yuppiechef's pet charity, Soil for Life. Both companies have come up smelling of roses but the biggest winner of all, however, is Soil for Life. The grand total in donations pledged by Yuppiechef and its fans, by 56 minutes to midnight last night, Valentine's Day, Sunday, 14 February 2010, was R100 000. Now isn't that nice? Everyone a winner - and not a lawyer's nasty letter in sight.

Nine days and counting until Design Indaba!

BizLounge
Guy Buttery - living the dream   MUSIC
[Ruth Cooper] Acclaimed guitarist Guy Buttery is soon to be touring the KZN to promote his latest album Fox Hill Lane before jetting overseas for many exciting projects including collaborating on a world music project in Mauritius with acclaimed artists Eric Triton and Alhousseini and representing South Africa at Toulouse's Rio Loco festival in France. Luckily Guy managed to find some time in his busy schedule to chat to the BizLounge via e-mail before beginning his tour.

A ground breaking production of Pictures of You   THEATRE
[Riccardo Spagni] When I went to see Pictures of You, I had no idea what to expect. I am unabashedly lazy and I will gladly admit that I did no research on it. So I was pleasantly intrigued when a little speech was given before the show started and we were given a bit of background. Also mention worthy was the fact that Premier Helen Zille was in the audience. As I have no interest in politics, I didn't know what she looked like, otherwise I would probably have tried to wangle a prosperity shot with her afterwards!

Kurt Schoonrad is Home Groan   THEATRE
[Riccardo Spagni] It has been my experience that the most common reason for any comedian to do a one-man show is that he's feeling a bit out-of-pocket and needs to make the rent for the end of next month. This leads to a rather average rehash of said comedian's most popular jokes, the vast majority of which are only mildly funny at best. Even worse is the fact that most Capetonian comics have a tendency to make jokes that go far over this ex-Joburger's head. I only recently discovered where Lavender Hill was, you know! With much trepidation, therefore, I dragged myself to see Kurt Schoonrad.

Will the “Bulgeun Effect” propel Bafana to World Cup glory?   2010 FIFA WORLD CUP
[Dr Nikolaus Eberl] When Bafana Bafana was drawn to play previous world champions France and Uruguay, along with Mexico, at the Final FIFA Draw in Cape Town, many international football pundits were quick to write off South Africa's chances of advancing to the second round.

Die Antwoord take it to the next level   MUSIC
[Ruth Cooper] Jumping on the bandwagon, so to speak, BizLounge thought we should get in on a little of Die Antwoord hype and action (and Google hits) and do our own little story on the interesting phenomena of the Cape Town zef rap-rave crew that is Die Antwoord. There is no denying that the trio; Ninja, Yo-landi and DJ Hi-Tek, that make up Die Antwoord have recently exploded over the net and have taken not just SA by storm but have also caused quite the stir internationally with their combination of 80's techno beats and dirty Afrikaans rap. With something like 1000 new Facebook fans a day and a site that crashed by the deluge of visitors after a few recent reviews were posted, Die Antwoord does really seem to be “the answer”. But the answer to what is the million dollar question.

Nominees announced for Fleur du Cap Awards   THEATRE

"To speak and to speak well are two things. A fool may talk, but a wise man speaks." - Ben Jonson
"You've got to be success minded. You've got to feel that things are coming your way when you're out selling; otherwise, you won't be able to sell anything." - Curtis Carlson
"Your most effective marketing tool may be your own customer list, but you'd better make sure you have one. A lot of people think they can just use the list of companies they send bills to. Wrong. That's a billing list. If you want a marketing list, you have to generate one, and that means including the information a marketer needs, which is a lot different from the information a credit manager needs." - Ernan Roman
"Your brand's power lies in dominance. It is better to have 50% of one market, instead of 10% of five markets." - Al Ries
"If you don't get noticed, you don't have anything. You just have to be noticed, but the art is in getting noticed naturally, without screaming or without tricks." - Leo Burnett
