Overwiev of Marketing Communication degree at UJ
The driving force in Marketing Communication today is the ability to think strategically on a creative level. Our BA Marketing Communication offers students a major in Communication, Marketing Management and Marketing Communication, positioning us as an arts nouveau in the South African context.
This three-tiered design equips students with both practical and reflexive skills to tackle all the areas of Marketing Communication strategies. A significant advantage of this degree is that the compulsory majors come from both the Humanities and Management faculties - ensuring a well-rounded graduate with both people and business acumen. The orientation of this degree is one of integrated communication. As such, the Marketing Communication course exposes one to a shift in the industry away from the traditional advertising landscape to one where communication takes centre stage. Already in 2001, Advantage magazine highlighted this fact: advertising out, communication in. In this ever-changing and evolving industry, it is thus imperative to keep up to date. Our lecture material is consequently drawn from a variety of sources, not only academic. At the essence of the degree is a focused education that will equip you for the world of the agency or brand consultancies.
Thus, the content covered (theoretically and practically) includes a shift to Integrated Communication as the starting point. The traditional advertising approach is then investigated to contextualize this shift. Advertising as a concept is dissected and the scope, functions and classifications of advertising are explored. The remaining elements of the traditional promotional mix are also focused on: personal selling, sales promotion, direct marketing, sponsorship and public relations. The evaluation of these marketing communication efforts is then discussed. With an understanding of where the industry was, it is then possible to introduce where the industry is and where it is moving to as a business. Integrated Communication (and its related concepts) is the focus point hereof - incorporating a cutting edge best practice approach to this component. This strategic orientation ensures that Marketing Communication is seen as a necessary business tool.
The overall outcome of the final year is the development of a fully-fledged Marketing Communication campaign for a client. In order to achieve this, the practices and functions of the broader Marketing Communication industry are analyzed in detail - a state of the industry overview. This involves investigating the South African landscape. Thereafter, the skills and capabilities to function as an Account Manager are elaborated on. As the degree is fundamentally strategic in orientation, a large proportion of the work covered reflects Strategic Planning. As we endorse the notion that a brand is more than a name or an icon, branding as a holistic experience will be impressed upon you. As the most suitable message needs to be conveyed, insight into media planning is crucial. Here you will be introduced to the media planning function, media research and commonly used media terminology. This systematic exposure will culminate in the media strategy and formal media plan. Creative thinking is not neglected. The business of creative is emphasized and you will learn how big idea thinking can add value throughout the communication process. The focus of this component is on the development of conceptual thinking knowledge and not execution.
Underlying this entire process is continual practical training, both in lectures and formal assignments. Outings aimed at broadening horizons are a priority.
As such, you need to have passion for communicating and sensitivity towards functioning in an idea economy. Intuitive curiosity and an interest in, and an understanding of, human behaviour are necessary. You must be open to new experiences and enjoy challenges as much as you relish working under pressure.
