Show profile Hide profileI am a Public Relations Manager at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and I am interested in joining your team.
As a Journalism graduate I have experience in the field of media, marketing, communications and public relations. I am a highly motivated individual who has gained extensive experience in communicating with members of the public, private, government and higher education sectors.
I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism. I have a good command of the English language and have had articles syndicated around the country in sister publications under the banner of Independent Newspapers.
My experience as a journalist at The Mercury has enabled me to deal with the public, private, corporate and government sector in a professional, unbiased and objective manner.
Areas covered as a journalist include tourism, crime, road accidents, leisure, health, environmental issues, education, art, science, research, human interest, current affairs, local and municipal developments. I am passionate about team work but work equally well independently. I possess good organisational skills, am computer literate and enthusiastic about photography, social responsibility, design, research and medical developments.
In my previous positions as Deputy Director: Features Editor at Government Communications, I wrote content for products and platforms at the Department, researched and wrote comprehensive, well developed and in-depth feature articles for Public Sector Manager Magazine, sub-edited SANews.gov.za content and content for other products within the organisation, coached and mentored seven journalists and updated content on the SANews website using the Content Management System. I also edited and produced content for GCIS Radio, often providing sound clips for various bulletins.
My experience in public relations/ communications has focused largely on events management, advertising, establishing and maintaining communication through print, web, mass mailer systems and social networking sites and generating positive publicity. I have a good understanding of the higher education sector, protocols, procedures and degree of confidentiality required when dealing with media, staff and student issues.
In my current position as Public Relations Manager in the College of Humanities at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, my writing and communications skills have proved valuable in producing media statements and generating publicity by marketing College initiatives, profiling new initiatives and partnerships. As Public Relations Manager, one of my primary focusses is on generating positive publicity for research publications and community engagements and academic partnerships. I work well with people of varying personalities and currently mentor and coach staff in the College of Humanities Public Relations Unit.
I believe the skills and knowledge which I have gained through my experience from within the respective fields which I have studied and worked will prove valuable in executing critical tasks.
