Miles Jarvis
I have been working as a Graphic Designer in the publishing industry for over 15 years - mostly concentrated on educational resources for both schools and retail in both local and overseas markets. I have been freelancing since February offering skills in graphic design, illustration and photography not only in publishing, but main stream design - above and below the line.

1989: I started my working career with Barker McCormac Advertising and Marketing (Saachi & Saachi affiliated) as a visualiser. Promoted to Art Director in 1990. Duties included conceptualisation, visualising, illustration, client sell and production (TV, radio and print).
1992: Joined Reprograph as Design/Production Manager. Gained experience as a manager, directing the efforts of four designers. Introduction to computer based design.
1993: Joined PR company - Duette Communications. Responsibilities included: concepts, design, reproduction and print of above and below the line advertising. Clients included Van Leer Group, Eskom, Chubb and Eagle Security.
1995: Joined The Chart Studio, a publishing company producing and marketing its own childrens' educational material. My duties included conceptualisation (artistic and editorial), design, illustration, artwork briefs, photography, scanning, retouching, reproduction and production as well as co-ordinating a team of designers, subject specialists and editors. Became Publishing Director in 1996 with 5% shareholding. Explored overseas retail markets and sourced production solutions in China.
1999: Started my own business, Plexus Design CC, retaining The Chart Studio as a client and continuing to producing designs for their publishing program. I also took on other clients to broaden the creative base. These included Edgars, Philips, Dulux and Klatzko & Waldron.
2000: Returned to The Chart Studio (now Chart Studio Publishing) as Publishing Director with a 2% shareholding. Continued our aggressive publishing program with the introduction of kit formats. The designs became very sophisticated and could only be produced competitively in Asia, further cementing our relationship with printers in this region. Corvest (RMB) became 40% shareholders in 2003. Early in 2005 my partner passed away and I acted as interim CEO whilst we decided on the future of the company. Our efforts to sell to a USA based firm failed and the company was purchased by a Cape Town based competitor.
2006 to 2011: Joined Raptor/Lets Look Publishing with an 8% shareholding and helped form a new division - Raptor Creative, which was solely responsible for producing material for the group's publishing program. These duties included: conceptualisation, research, editorial, illustration, photography, production and co-ordinating out-sourced involvement (artists, photographers and subject specialists). Creative also assisted with non-core design work for Raptor Print and Blend Events. In 2010 the group assisted with the set up of a digital publishing company by financing the completion of the publishing solution and providing an operating platform. I hold a 10% share in the newly formed entity - Raptor Digital. My role was to assist with the front-end design of custom publications such as, magazines, brochures, catalogues, menus, books etc. This also involved preparing material for Flash and dealing with the team responsible for the back-end assembly.
Present: With the uncertainty in the educational publishing industry, I decided to leave the Raptor/Lets look Publishing group to go on my own to focus more on main-stream design, illustration and photography - although I continue to produce material for various educational publishing programs as well as fulfilling my role within Raptor Digital.
