Show profile Hide profileI'm borderline shy/wild.
I'm a freelance writer and “recovering” journalist; previously with House and Leisure Magazine, Style Magazine, Fine Music Radio and e.tv.
Some of my articles have been published internationally. Hmmm...so what does that make me? Rich and famous in Koekenaap, siestog.
I've had some poetry, essays and short stories published, with perhaps a play and novel in the (long-term) pipeline. Big deal...yawn…stretch…zzz.
I used to be a lentil-eating leftie, screaming Viva! in cheap Mexican restaurants in Observatory and at so-called political rallies. I wore potato print T-shirts made by white women who looked like wild horses from Noordhoek and Hout Bay.
Yes, I was part of the PC Left-Waffe (worse that the Luftwaffe) and danced endlessly around Tofu Braai Fires with undomesticated washed-out conscientious objectors and Table View lesbians who thought that Uhuru was the name of a new alfalfa sprout quiche or even better, a macrobiotic dish.
I joined the End Conscription Campaign, the United Democratic Front, and then the ANC in New York in 1986, spent time in detention as a conscript in the South African Defence Force for not behaving politically. Today, if I look at the political landscape, I wonder…sic transit Gloria mundi. (Don’t worry, I too didn't know that Gloria was sick.)
Some of my best times...some of my worst times? I was once a member of the Foreskin Restoration Society (Green Point branch). I'm dead serious.
I also worked as a gossip columnist long before heat magazine et al, a teenage grape harvester on a wine farm in Namaqualand and a (moffie!) bouncer at a sleazy pub on Green Market Square.
Also briefly, for a children’s rights organisation, Molo Songololo, but I was expelled quickly, as they thought that I was an apartheid government spy, simply because I was (and still am) friends with one of Pik Botha's children. See my tears. O die pyn gedagte. My koek is koud. Oi Gevalt!
I moonlighted as a radio newsreader, a voice-over artist, a radio drama actor, an extra in the opera Aida and Tape Aids for the Blind.
When I was 21, I was a secretarial ombudsman for an Afrikaans psychopath cum psychiatrist in New York. One day I took flight after he locked me out of my apartment and I had to scuttle through the cold, snowy streets like a hungry amputee.
Later, I worked for two days at the Cape Town General Post Office and fled. For three days, I worked at a Cape Town tabloid newspaper, and fled.
Once I was a manager of a Sea Point ice-cream parlour (I gave all the ice cream away and was fired), an informal taxi driver, a waiter and an alcoholic wine steward.
I’ve worked at a drug and alcohol treatment centre (ahem…after doing some time there as an “inmate”). In my youth I once attempted wild whoring and theft for some extra cash, but let's just say I wasn't really successful. My heart wasn't in it. I think?
I have no regrets...
