Eamonn Ryan
With 17 years' experience of writing for publications such as The Star Business Report (over an unbroken period of more than 10 years), for whom reliability, trustworthiness and punctuality is a given, I have achieved such qualities. As a freelance, in an industry where business and technology evolutions mean rapid shifts in workflow, I have also learned to be innovative and flexible, or would not have succeeded in this demanding field.
Show profile Hide profileMy legal background and experience attending board meetings as a company secretary (and alternate director) has given me the ability to fully comprehend business issues. I feel this has given me an edge as a journalist and editor in that I am capable of understanding what is being said to me - no small issue in a publishing world where being misquoted is the most common complaint. My experience of working for myself also underscores my motivation to find interesting stories from submissions delivered to me and to turn them into articles that interest readers.
Having said that, I am at a critical life stage where my family requires some financial dependability, and am therefore looking for a permanent position which offers me firstly that stability, and secondly the challenge that I have become used to working for myself.
1999-Present Freelance Financial Writer
Certain of the larger freelance assignments I have had include:
2000-2001 Freelance Business Editor for Finance Week (today called Finweek), where I was responsible for 4-6 pages of this leading financial magazine, selecting and editing articles from among several journalists, as well as writing regular articles myself. I was part of a team consisting of Graham Fiford (since deceased), editor Nigel Bruce and owner David Gleason (also deceased), until the temporary demise of the magazine (it went insolvent), later to be bought out by Media24.
2005 Writer and editor of private equity report Catalyst for approximately six months. Appointed by David Gleason Publications, this involved reporting on major deals and providing educated analysis of industry trends.
2001-2004 Wrote and edited the annual industry standard Mergers & Acquisitions book published by auditing firm EY (then called Ernst & Young) detailing the main deals of each year and offering analysis of what these deals meant for business.
More generally as a financial writer I have all along been extremely broad-based, though tending to focus on the business and financial sectors, personal finance and information technology. During the 16 years I have been a freelance writer I have also:

• Entrepreneur magazine - investment and personal finance column
• Enterprise magazine
• Sawubona
• ITWeb publications
• Been a regular 'special feature' writer for

• The Sowetan.
• Written the lead stories each month for Accountancy SA (and their Investment section) and Murray & Robert's internal Robust magazine
• Been a regular contributor to Corporate Research Foundation's series of books on Best Employers and Best Managers
• Written annual or sustainability reports for: Liberty Life, Eqstra Holdings, Deloitte, Mutual & Federal and Afgri
• Contributed substantially to once-off and annual publications such as 'Enterprising Women' and 'Portfolio of Black Business'.
