ESPN founder Bill Rasmussen dies aged 91
Bill Rasmussen, the founder of ESPN, has died aged 91. Rasmussen passed away on 18 August 2026 following a battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Rasmussen founded ESPN in 1979, helping establish what would become one of the world’s most influential sports media networks.
Known as the “Intentional Optimist”, Rasmussen’s contribution to sports broadcasting is explored in his final book and documentary project, Sports Heaven: The Birth of ESPN, released on 28 July 2026.
The project features reflections from people who worked with and knew Rasmussen, charting the origins of ESPN and his role in reshaping sports media.
Rasmussen’s death marks the passing of a figure whose vision helped change how sport is broadcast and consumed.
