ICT-Works advancing public transport

The concept of a smart city is a vision shared by major cities across the globe. Responding to this, ICT-Works designed and implemented a world-first Automated Fare Collection (AFC) System for the City of Cape Town (CoCT), and so created an interconnected transport system in the city.

"Running a major city is an increasingly complex challenge. Cities want to improve the quality of their citizens' lives by providing innovative services and optimising operations on a day-to-day basis," comments Xoliswa Kakana, CEO at ICT-Works. "Understanding that technology is at the heart of any smart city, we needed to create a system that was easily interconnected, offering opportunities to develop new services."

The MyCiTi AFC System's objective was to provide a ticketless transport system for the city. Since its inception, the project has added functionality and expanded this service to more vehicles and stations within the city and surrounding areas, including the provision of Information Technology Support (ITS) redundancy, which is a vital component of the Advanced Public Transport Management System (APTMS).

Coordiating day-to-day operations

A smart city platform enables closer integration of solutions and other systems to coordinate day-to-day operations. The AFC System allows for integrated system supports and optimises timetable preparation, vehicle scheduling and personnel scheduling for public transport companies. It provides efficient provision of information for passengers, personnel and management, and daily dispatching of personnel and vehicles; settlement and wages accounting.

Kakana says: "It is through projects such as the City of Cape Town that ICT-Works has been able to showcase our innovation and our ability to deliver world-class solutions. Globally this was a first-ever and we are privileged to have been at the forefront, leading the project."
