Building on the enduring legacy of Tuks Law School

Reinette Taljaard, the first visually impaired student to enrol to the School for Legal Practice (Tuks Law School)

The latest delegates of this programme, presented through Enterprises University of Pretoria (Enterprises UP), started their classes on in July. Among these delegates was the first blind student to partake in the curriculum. Reinette Taljaard, an LLB graduate who recently completed her studies is enrolled for the programme after hearing about it from her lecturers. “The first lecture of the course was interesting and informative and I look forward to the following six months,” she said. To allow adequate accessibility for Reinette, the course content will be presented to her through audio readable documents. “The course leader approached me directly and offered to provide the study material to me electronically, as I am visually impaired and therefore unable to read printed text. I will be making use of the University's Disability Unit to complete tests and exams” Reinetta said.

Galaletsang Ngoako expressed her excitement at being accepted to attend the programme. “I heard about the School for Legal Practice through many attorneys that I have been working with. It came highly recommended and I was very excited to learn about my acceptance for the programme” she said. Having completed her Law undergraduate studies in just three years, Galaletsang was unable to find a firm where she could complete her articles. “I am currently funding my own studies on an intern stipend. This programme will shave time off my articles, which will help me a great deal,” she emphasised.

Heading this programme is the internationally acclaimed Prof Rian Cloete, Head of the UP Department of Procedural Law. He leads a team of practitioners renowned for their practical experience and expertise in various fields of law. The School aims to provide delegates with further applied skills in legal practice, thereby also improving access to the legal profession. The School for Legal Practice is accredited in terms of the Attorneys Act 53 of 1979 (as amended).

Enterprises UP has created many such courses to upskill professionals within all fields of business and continues in its efforts to shift knowledge to insight.
