New fashion label with message for youth

With World Aids Day having arrived, Ukhozi FM radio personality Phumlani Dube is setting a new fashion trend in an educational way.

Dube, 30, has come up with a new fashion line called Nix Mapha, which is set to be launched today at the SABC studios in Durban.

“Nix Mapha is a colloquial Zulu term meaning ‘no sharing' but which in this context is used to communicate the message that my body is mine and mine alone and I will not share it with anyone or anything that is destructive or negative - my body is not for sale,” he said.

He described Nix Mapha as a design that would appeal to the youth, especially during this festive season, but will more importantly send out a clear message.

“This is not just a fashion brand but it's a social movement that puts people before profits,” Dube explained.

“It's a culture and way of life. At the end of the day we want the youth to own it and to live by Nix Mapha principles.

“For now its just T-shirts and vests but we also have other products such as caps, camp chairs and glass tumblers that we hope people will use this festive season.

“Plans have also been finalised for the Nix Mapha kiddies' range, which will be unveiled in the new year.”

Nix Mapha is a unique concept, he said, that uses fashion as a tool to achieve higher social transformation objectives and to communicate messages of social reconstruction and moral regeneration in a creative way that is not dull and boring.

“People are dying of HIV and Aids and of sexually transmitted illnesses, which is why I think the product or label encourages people not to share. Simply put, if you don't share or give, you live longer,” Dube said.
