Baby whale beached at Port Edward
Members of the public tried in vain to rescue a baby humpback whale that was trapped in the rocks off Port Edward over the weekend and, despite their attempts, the baby whale still beached itself and died.
According to The Mercury, the National Sea Rescue Institute's Port Edward controller, Alan Stiller responded to reports that a whale calf had been trapped at Grannies Pool, where a large crowd of bystanders were trying to get the baby back into deeper water.
The two men who were attempting to rescue the baby whale were swept out to sea by prevailing rip currents and had to be rescued themselves by two other members of the public. All four people were taken to hospital for observation.
This is the second whale that has washed up off the KwaZulu-Natal coastline in a week.
