SA slips four places in IT Competitiveness Index

South Africa has fallen four places in the worldwide rankings in information technology, according to the Business Software Alliance, which released its 2011 edition of the Economist Intelligence Unit's IT Industry Competitiveness Index.

South Africa is currently ranked in the 47th spot out of the 66 countries that were surveyed for the index. The index benchmarks the countries based on indicators that cover the critical foundation areas of information technology innovation.

These include the IT infrastructure, human capital, research and development, the legal environment and public support for industry development. The top countries in the list are the United States, Finland, Singapore, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

The index reports that the countries that held strong leadership positions in last year's survey have consolidated their positions by building solid foundations for technology innovation through years of investment.

BSA President and chief executive Robert Holleyman says that investing in the fundamentals of technology and innovation will pay huge dividends over the longer term.

Malaysia leapt up 11 spots through a massive investment in research and development activities while India climbed 10 spots on the basis of its existing and robust research and development investments.
