Self-worth can be pivotal to career growth

We all know that our self-worth plays an important role in who we are and the person we present to the world. Like a R100 note, we assign value to ourselves based on the view we hold of the kind of people we are. However, not many of us know that this self-worth can be pivotal to our career growth and the success we make of ourselves in the ever-changing world of work.

"When it comes to considering your workplace worth, think of yourself as a product and the company you work for as the marketplace. Ask yourself if you add value and how much people would be willing to spend to secure the particular services you offer. Like a much-loved brand on a supermarket shelf, think about how you too can position yourself as a sought after commodity in the place you call work," advises Kelly's managing director, Graham Bentley.

Engage in exercises

The good news is that unlike a R100 note, you can improve your workplace worth by engaging in a number of valuable exercises as recommended by Bentley:

  • Analyse your strengths and weaknesses as part of a personal SWOT analysis. Assess where you exhibit opportunities for growth and the threat of failure, and align this with your current job description. If for example you're outgoing and gregarious, consider client liaison. If, however, you're a factual person who likes to work on their own, then think about a role that involves analysis and strategy.
  • Work on how you can align your strengths with your company's vision, mission and overarching goals and you'll automatically improve on the worth of your contribution to your colleagues, department and managers.
  • Let your hard work and consistency speak for themselves. The most valuable brands in the market have been positioned as reliable, make sure you do the same and others will soon notice your improved workplace worth.
  • Today's workplace is dynamic, fast-paced and forever changing. Like technology that is out of date, your workplace worth will drop if you aren't current and up to date. Study further, read industry journals, attend seminars, join relevant associations and constantly improve on yourself and your value in the world of work.

"Start reflecting on your workplace worth by asking for feedback from colleagues and line managers. Work on the areas that could do with a boost and hone your natural strengths. Only you can increase your workplace worth so get working on it today. Why? Because, quite simply, you're worth it," concludes Bentley.
