Parkhurst stages 'Bra Run' for breast cancer survivors

4th Avenue in Parkhurst, Johannesburg will be a sea of bra-swaddled breasts this Friday, 22 October when 50-plus breast cancer survivors, breast cancer surgeon Dr Carol Benn and members of the Breast Health Foundation (BHF) drop their tops and dash through the street in support of breast cancer awareness.

Participants in the 'bra-run' will commence their run at 5.30pm on 4th Avenue, Parkhurst from the Mugg & Bean which has partnered with Novartis Oncology and the BHF for the 'Pink Mugg Shot' campaign during the month of October. Via the 'Pink Mugg Shot' campaign, Mugg & Bean offers clientele 'pink' cappuccinos in aid of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The BHF decided to organise the 'bra-run' in a bid to find a novel, fun way of heightening breast cancer awareness and education in a month packed full of activities.

Says Louise Turner, spokesperson for the BHF: "Breast cancer statistics in South Africa are frightening. Many women have the erroneous perception that breast cancer is a death sentence. The BHF is trying to educate women about the importance of breast self-examination and the fact that early detection saves lives. We thought the bra-run would be an opportunity to show the public that we are not only survivors, but are living life to the full."
