A million iPhone 3Gs sell over opening weekend

The weekend of 11 July was a good one for Apple: With the worldwide launch of the iPhone 3G on Friday, the company sold a cool one million 3G models around the world and served up 10 million iTunes App Store downloads, according to the company.

"iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend. It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world," noted Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

iPhone 3G is now available in 20 countries - Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and the US - as well as Hong Kong. It will go on sale in France on 17 July.
