Nkwenkwe Nkomo appointed ASA chair

Yesterday, Monday, 20 August 2007, it was announced that Nkwenkwe Nkomo has been appointed chairperson of the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) of South Africa and Diane Terblanche deputy chairperson.

Nkomo has served as a member of the ASA board since 2001 and is a member of the ASA final appeal committee. Terblanche has been a member of the ASA board since 2005 and is a member of the ASA final appeal committee.

Commented ASA CE Thembi Msibi: "I am delighted with the board's decision on these new appointments. I look forward to working with them to realise our objectives."

Nkomo

Nkomo cut his teeth in advertising as a trainee junior copywriter at Lindsay Smithers FCB in 1983. Nkomo became the first black chairman of the Association of Advertising Agencies (AAA, now called the ACA) and held the position for 10 years, using the time to start the transformation process in the advertising industry.

He was creative director of FCB Johannesburg and later appointed deputy chairman. Nkomo is currently group chairman of FCB South Africa. He is also the deputy chairperson of the 2010 National Communication Partnership.

Terblanche

Terblanche was admitted as an attorney at law in the High Court of SA in 1986. She has been involved in consumer protection in various capacities since 1993 and has held board memberships of at least 10 organisations involved in consumer protection. As a founder of the Consumer Institute of South Africa, Terblanche became CEO for the consumer research and lobbying institution from 1997 to 2001.

Terblanche is an independent consumer protection consultant and is currently the chairperson for the National Consumer Tribunal. She is also a member of the Policy Board Financial Services and Regulations (an advisory body to the Minister of Finance).
