The Fame Week Africa × Pressure Cooker Studios Songwriting Camp 2026 will take place from 25-27 October in Cape Town, immediately ahead of Fame Week Africa.
Under the banner “You Bring the Story. We’ll Bring the Sound,” the three-day initiative is designed to bring music creators into the content development process earlier, using real creative briefs as the starting point for collaboration.
Rather than having musicians create tracks independently and then look for opportunities to place them, the camp will pair selected projects with curated teams of South African producers, composers and musicians working alongside Pressure Cooker Studios.
The objective is to create original, sync-ready music specifically in response to the needs of each project.
Filmmakers, directors, documentary makers, agencies, brands, production companies and content creators within the Fame Week Africa community are invited to submit creative briefs outlining their projects, the emotions they want to evoke and the role music will play in their stories.
Between three and six briefs will be selected and matched with music teams for the three-day camp.
During the programme, the teams will develop original music demos based on the selected briefs. Project creators will then be able to hear the resulting music and receive demos and stems to test within their edits.
There is no cost to submit a brief, and selected projects receive the original music created for their brief at no cost, with no obligation to use it.
If a project creator chooses to use a track commercially, the music can subsequently be licensed at applicable production music rates, with optional exclusivity available.
The model gives creators an opportunity to explore a music direction before making a commercial commitment, while giving African music makers direct exposure to the kinds of projects and briefs driving demand across the content industry.
The initiative forms part of Fame Week Africa's broader focus on creating practical connections between different parts of the continent's creative economy.
Music and screen content are closely linked commercially, but the two creative communities do not always interact early enough in the development process. The camp is intended to address that gap by putting music creators and content makers around the same brief.
“One of the things we want Fame Week Africa to do is create real opportunities for different parts of the creative industries to work together,” says Martin Hiller, portfolio director of Fame Week Africa.
“Music is such a powerful part of storytelling, yet filmmakers and music creators don’t always have the opportunity to connect early enough in the creative process. This collaboration with Pressure Cooker Studios changes that. We’re bringing the story and the sound into the same room, working from real briefs and giving African creatives an opportunity to build relationships that can continue long after the camp ends.”
For Pressure Cooker Studios, the initiative provides a practical bridge between the continent's music talent and the growing demand for original sound across film, television, advertising and digital content.
“There is incredible musical talent across Africa, and equally exciting stories being developed across film, television, advertising and digital content,” says Katryn Nieuwoudt, Music Catalogue & Publishing Lead at Pressure Cooker Studios.
“This camp is about connecting those two worlds in a practical way. Instead of writing music and hoping it eventually finds a home, our teams will be responding to real stories, real characters and real creative briefs.”
The camp will also give participating filmmakers and content creators access to the expertise and infrastructure of Cape Town-based Pressure Cooker Studios.
The studio's capabilities span original music composition, sound design, final mix, ADR, Foley and music supervision. Its 720m2 facility includes Dolby Atmos theatres, a Foley stage, recording and control rooms, as well as dedicated composition and audio-edit suites.
This infrastructure allows the songwriting camp to move beyond a networking initiative and into the practical development of music that can be tested against actual content.
For participating music makers, the opportunity is similarly focused on real-world application. Responding to active content briefs allows producers, composers and musicians to develop music for specific storytelling contexts while building relationships with the filmmakers, agencies, brands and production companies commissioning content.
The organisers also position the camp as a development platform rather than a conventional commissioning process, allowing both sides to experiment without an obligation to proceed with a commercial licence.
The call is open to agencies and brands, filmmakers and directors, documentary makers, production companies and content creators, including those working on passion projects.
Participants retain the rights to their own projects and materials throughout the process, while the camp is exclusive to the Fame Week Africa community.
For an African creative economy increasingly operating across borders and disciplines, the initiative reflects a shift towards more integrated collaboration between music, film, advertising and digital content.
It also gives music makers an opportunity to engage directly with the people shaping the stories that could provide new commercial applications for their work.
“Instead of writing music and hoping it eventually finds a home, our teams will be responding to real stories, real characters and real creative briefs,” says Nieuwoudt. “We’re excited to see what happens when talented music makers are given the opportunity to create specifically for the stories coming out of the Fame Week Africa community.”
