In addition to our weekly print edition, we have a strong and growing digital presence, with daily news published across our website and social media platforms.
We are looking for an experienced, energetic and digitally minded multi-media journalist with a sharp news sense, strong community knowledge and a passion for journalism.
The successful candidate will be expected to break news, generate original stories, pursue in-depth follow-ups and identify issues that matter to our communities.
Key responsibilities:
- Break and follow up on local, regional and national news stories relevant to our readers.
- Generate original, impactful story ideas and pursue in-depth reporting on issues of public interest.
- Cover breaking news quickly, accurately and responsibly.
- Report on crime, courts, municipal affairs, community issues and other key local beats.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with reliable sources and community contacts.
- Produce accurate, engaging content for both the newspaper and digital platforms.
- Produce photographs, video, reels, soundbites and other multimedia content.
- Identify opportunities to develop stories across multiple digital platforms.
- Publish and update breaking news and other content online in a timely manner.
- Apply SEO principles and use audience insights to improve digital content.
- Monitor developing stories, social media and other news sources for potential leads.
- Ensure all content complies with the Press Code and Caxton's editorial policies and standards.
- Work collaboratively with the editorial and digital teams.
- Contribute to the growth of Northglen News' digital audience and online presence.
- A valid degree or diploma in Journalism.
- At least five years' newsroom experience, with a proven track record.
- Excellent English written and spoken language skills. Ability to speak other languages is an advantage.
- Strong news judgement and proven ability to generate original story ideas and develop them independently.
- Strong writing, research, interviewing and fact-checking skills.
- Experience in covering crime, courts, municipal affairs and community news.
- A confident photographer and the ability to produce short-form video, reels, soundbites and other multimedia content for digital platforms.
- Strong knowledge of social media platforms and the ability to publish and promote content appropriately.
- A sound understanding of digital-first journalism, SEO and online audience behaviour.
- A thorough understanding of the Press Code and principles of ethical journalism.
- A valid driver's licence and own reliable vehicle.
- Good knowledge of the North Durban community and established local contacts will be a strong advantage.
