Sawubona, 2012! Hello, hello, hello and welcome to 2012! This is the future speaking! I know there were a lot of readers out there who couldn't wait to see the back of 2011 and we're all desperately hoping for a bigger, better and brighter year this year... although what's been happening economically in Europe and America does cause some trepidation. Nevertheless, as that immortal line from Galaxy Quest goes, " Never give up, never surrender!" So, we're kicking off the year here at Bizcommunity Marketing & Media South Africa with our annual Biz Trends Report Series and our first two sangomas are Chris Moerdyk and Louise Marsland. There's a stack more of insightful and illuminating trends lined up for you over the next couple of weeks, and don't forget that we'll compile all the submissions into one pdf for ease of reading at the end of the series. Enjoy! Simone Puterman ( @SimoneBiz) Managing editorPS To go backwards in time momentarily, Halo Advertising released this Agency 12 Days of Christmas audio gem, which unfortunately missed our last newsletter of 2012. Do yourself a favour and give it a listen. Responses to this column welcomed in our editor's column archive. Please send all South African marketing and media news to marketingnews@bizcommunity.com, opinion pieces to contributors-marketing@bizcommunity.com and international news to internationalnews@bizcommunity.com. [Chris Moerdyk: @chrismoerdyk] It would be singularly arrogant and just plain stupid of me to boast about the fact that nine of the 11 trends I predicted for 2011 were spot on. Quite simply because they were as predictable as the notion that Sundays are pretty much certain to be followed by Mondays [ aha, Rebecca Black taught you something... - managing ed]. Read more >>
[Louise Marsland] If you're reading this, it means the world hasn't ended yet. Oh goody gumdrops! I prepared my annual industry predictions for 2012 in advance due to our print deadlines on AdVantage, so I'd be really pissed off if there was no one left to read them and I'd angsted over them for nothing. So here goes... Read more >>

The increased responsibilities of 21st century marketing leaders are not only exceedingly complex, but carry far greater levels of accountability than ever before in an era of data digitisation. Moreover, today, they face a convergence of agency deliverables. For example, is the social media strategy executed by the PR agency, the digital agency, the media agency or the creative agency? It is difficult to manage and integrate all the specialists. Read more >>

[Wayne Naidoo] We have long lamented the draining of the skills pool in the advertising industry. And many people have made good arguments as to why we are experiencing the 'juniorfication' of the industry and what we can do about this. However, I think that unless we are able to address this issue holistically, on an industry-wide basis, we risk a further spiral. Read more >>

[Jade Delphine Otten] Isn't it exciting to find a product or service that you have no doubt would become the next 'Chuck Norris' in the business arena? But isn't it also daunting to sit in front of your inbox three weeks later, sifting through nothing but junk and spam e-mails? The excitement seems to rub off so much quicker, doesn't it? [Henrie Geyser: motoring editor] My Festive Season transport was a rather big Japanese sleigh which was spacious enough to accommodate a large Father Christmas and three equally portly assistant present distributors and comfortable enough to bring them all the way from the North Pole to Cape Town - AND it had enough luggage space for all the presents for an entire suburb. [Eugene Yiga] Watching ET changed my life. I was so inspired by the way that movie made me laugh and cry that I actually decided to become a director so that I could inspire other people too. Needless to say, Steven Spielberg has been my hero ever since. The man has such an amazing ability to take you on an adventure, so when I realised that he was directing the new Tintin movie, I couldn't wait to see what adventure he'd take us on this time. [Eugene Yiga] Sequels are tough. Either the movies keep getting better (like Toy Story) or they keep getting worse (like Shrek). Puss in Boots seems to be DreamWorks Studios' attempt to kick some life into a dying franchise with a movie that's part prequel and part spin-off. Unfortunately, as was the case with Pirates of the Caribbean, building an entire story around a side character can only get you so far. Read more >> More BizLounge news...
