Looking at the trends in 2013

Top of our offering today is the launch of our Biz Trends Report 2013 from top players in the advertising, marketing, media and retail industries. We have all just come out of a tough year, but what does 2013 hold for us? See what some of the industry players reckon will lead the way in 2013 - and please add your comments. Read why this year is a time of choices, decisions for strategic marketing management, according to Darren Woolley, and Sue Disler asks, "Who says magazine are dead?"

POPI is on the way, and attorney Steve Ferguson tells you why you should get proactive about privacy protection.

Naseem Javed says the world is passing through the eye of the needle, the all-out digital transition is responsible for ushering us into new era where age media now demands new age skills. So, what are the undiscovered skills in global advertising and branding?

If you were Larry Page, how would you feel about the fact that Android's dominant position as mobile operating system of choice do not all result in a proportionate share of advertising opportunities for Google? Llew Claasen asks whether Google's best form of attack was defence?.

OK, New Year's Day has come and gone, but as of now there are still 359 days left in 2013 - so there's still time to take a look at Natasha McClymont's seven New Year's resolutions for brand agencies.

Rod Baker: Content Director

[2013 trends] Time of choices, decisions for strategic marketing management
[Darren Woolley] Last year was certainly an economic roller-coaster ride. In 2013, marketers will need to look through the uncertainty and make some longer-term plans, as well as choices and decisions, on how they will steer their brands forward. So here are some of the decisions and choices to be made in 2013, in no particular order... Read more >>

[2013 trends] Who said magazines are dead?
[Sue Disler] What an interesting dilemma it was for me moving into publishing almost three years ago. The glossy was HERO and digital was a very, very bad word indeed. But I was excited that, for first time, I could really get to grips with CONTENT. In advertising that's the missing, quintessential link. In order to understand where I am headed here, let me contextualise my thinking by way of illustrating a historical, time-stamped journey of sorts. Read more >>

Incorrect media planning is costly
[Tinyiko Maswanganye] Successful advertising depends on several aspects. Among them are appealing creative concepts, proper execution, and delivery. If one part of the chain is broken, the advertising will lose the effectiveness and the money is wasted. The point I want to emphasise is the delivery of the message. This part is called media planning and buying. Read more >>

What is content curation?
[Athar Naser] When thinking about the content involved in your content strategy, there are two possible routes to take - creation and curation. Creation is, of course, the act of generating your own content. Curation, on the other hand, is the act of 'collecting', or 'collating' content your audience will find useful. Read more >>
