April Fool's... or not? The April Fool's press releases - under embargo - started arriving in my inbox on Thursday last week already, so when on Friday, 30 March 2012, I read The Media Online's story that Media24 almost poached the entire Sunday Times' investigative team of Mzilikazi Wa Afrika, Stephan Hofstatter and Rob Rose, I checked the date twice and still almost didn't believe it. Incidentally, the trio walked off with the 2011 Taco Kuiper Award for Investigative Journalism on Friday afternoon - nothing new for them. And then there's State Security's new 'advertising' campaign for the Protection of State Information Bill... On a different note, continuing the discussion about talent and skills-nurturing in the ad industry is Matthew Bull, with his open letter on Marklives.com: "How ad schools are losing our industry talented thinkers". He believes that "we need to recategorise creative people into being thinkers that express themselves visually, (visualthinkers) and those that express themselves with the written word or verbally (wordthinkers)." Do you agree or disagree? Please don't forget to take our Biz reader survey (first 1000 readers to respondents each receive a one-month subscription to iPad-only daily magazine iMaverick!). Travel safely this Easter/Passover - remember, don't drink and drive. Happy holidays! With big guns such as Zwelinzima Vavi, George Bizos and Thuli Madonsela opposing the Protection of Information Bill, the State Security Agency has embarked on a propaganda offensive. But the campaign may hit the wall because it appears Government has exceeded its mandate. [video] Read more >>
Marketing
[Thomas Oosthuizen] While most marketers will endorse the fact that marketing works in building brands, improving brand image and driving sales, the relationship between marketing and investor value is not always that clear. Although we as marketers will anecdotally believe it, isolating the effect of marketing is complex. Read more >>
[Sarah Britten] If Helen Zille is so marketing savvy, why is she making so many glaring tactical errors? The "refugee" tweet debacle is just the latest example. The DA's communications strategy team must surely be aware of where it's going wrong, but if it isn't, here are a few pointers. Read more >>
[Edward Fisher] You are rushing to complete a project for a client; hastily you whip through it in a final check - you even get a colleague to check the content before handing it over. Alas, the client still finds a glaring error. What went wrong? How could both of you have missed such an obvious mistake? Read more >>
[Matt Rose] Considering the amount of texting we do today, emoticons have 'exploded' and, whether used in Skype, BBM, SMS or WhatsApp, they have become a distinct style of expression and form a vital part of casual/digital vernacular punctuation. But what are the implications of these obscure little visages for marketers? Read more >>

[Herman Manson: @marklives] Trying to see the upside, Claire Cobbledick, MD of The Jupiter Drawing Room (Cape Town), says the loss of the Woolworths business has presented the agency with an opportunity, and will hopefully allow it to more liberty and freedom in its offering and in how the business is managed. "It's our year for living dangerously," says Cobbledick. She hopes the result will reinvigorate the agency. Read more >>

[Herman Manson: @marklives] Mike Barnwell, the recently appointed ECD at Draftfcb Cape Town, wants agency language focused on compartmentalising the communications trade to go. [Gillian Rightford] Much has been written about the relationship between Michael Jackson and his doctor, Conrad Murray. And haven't we also been wondering whether Whitney Houston's doctor will go under the same microscope? This got me thinking about the sometimes-dysfunctional relationship that exists between marketers and ad agencies. Read more >>
[Charisse Nel] I hate the word "advertising". Whenever I am at a social event and someone asks what I do, I mumble something about working in an advertising agency and hope I don't get the usual barrage of judging looks and comments about working for an evil team of brainwashers. Somewhere along the way, advertising lost its allure, its sense of glamour and its credibility as a service that solved business problems. Read more >>
[Colin Ramparsadh] Over the last while, I have been subjected to the most irritating ad known to radio, currently being flighted on Lotus FM - the one from Bidvest Bank advertising its foreign currency services to the Indian community in the annoying Peter Sellers-type Indian accent. This is a perfect example of a great initiative talking to a specific audience gone horribly wrong. Read more >>

[Marcela Ospina] Sources indicate that there are still some 30 million people without access to the internet. This is almost 90% of South Africa's population. It is hard to argue with these figures when explaining to corporates why they should invest more on digital and mobile marketing. However, there is still a lot to learn from small communities with limited internet access, as I will show in this piece. Read more >>

[Gill Moodie: @grubstreetSA] It's going to be an interesting year for KZN newspapers with Media24's The Witness making an aggressive play to break out of the Midlands under former Mercury editor Angela Quintal.
