Times, are they are a-changing?

Wow, can you believe it? Our new minister of communications, Roy Padayachie, has actually withdrawn the controversial Public Service Broadcasting Bill. And last week it was reported that the scope of the contentious Protection of Information Bill would be scaled down, too. Now let's hope that the mess at the SABC gets sorted out properly.

On the advertising front, not only does Y&R refuse to comment on the recent sudden resignation of Fraser Lamb, it turns out that the group of companies will be restructured into two units by January 2011 - a move apparently prompted by the need to avoid conflicts of interest while digital abilities are beefed up (and we'll see the introduction of VML into the country).

On the awards side (which I was trying to avoid in this column since it seems to be all I ever write about recently), TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris Johannesburg reports in its Bizcommunity press office that it is has been ranked as the third best agency in the world. This is according to the Annual 2010 Report published by Advertising Age's Creativity magazine - based on the results of seven top global creative awards shows (ADC, AICP, Andy Awards, Cannes Lions, Clios, D&AD and One Show).

Other big news is the further cancelling of huge sports sponsorship accounts, this time by Standard Bank with respect to cricket and soccer. Now that was not unexpected, wouldn't you say? (Think recession, retrenchments, sports administration...)

Have a great week
Simone Puterman (@SimoneBiz)
Managing editor

PS Fifteen daily newsletters and three weeklies left until year-end after this one goes out! It's sure been a long year but, still, where did it go?

PPS This week's Ornico Ad Showcase features TV ads for Sunlight 2 in 1, M-Net, Windhoek Lager, SABC1 and Hugo Boss, and radio ads for Hollard, Virgin Mobile, All Gold, Telkom Mobile and Kulula.

Please send all South African marketing and media news to marketingnews@bizcommunity.com, international news to internationalnews@bizcommunity.com and opinion pieces to contributors@bizcommunity.com. Responses to this column welcomed in our online editor's column archive.

Democratic discourse or nationalistic drivel: are South Africans truly empowered?
[Prof Nina Overton-de Klerk] Through an in-depth analysis of the forces and shifts that have shaped the emerging paradigm of strategic communication, I explain how the massive developments in digital communication, coupled with tenets that characterise post-modern communication practice, are changing the relationship between an organisation and its stakeholders irrevocably and irreversibly, thereby empowering the new communication 'super-consumer' beyond wildest expectations. Y&R to restructure, refuses comment on Lamb resignation
[Herman Manson: @marklives] Following the recent surprise announcement that Fraser Lamb had resigned as group CEO of Y&R, a wall of silence around the resignation seems to have been erected around the company by its management. But that's not all: the Y&R group of companies, which includes Y&R SA, Wunderman Johannesburg, aquaonline and BaseTwo, will be restructured into only two units by January 2011. Read more >>

Sex in advertising 101
[Chris Moerdyk: @chrismoerdyk] There is no greater boost to the male ego than to answer the phone and have a young female voice say, "I would like to talk to you about sex." And there is nothing more deflating to the male ego when that same voice adds... "in advertising." Read more >>

Correction: Ogilvy Joburg, not Ogilvy Cape Town, won Grand LIA
Ogilvy Cape Town was mistakenly credited for winning the Grand LIA for its Selinah TVC for the Topsy Foundation in the editorial column yesterday, Monday, 15 November 2010. It is, in fact, Ogilvy Johannesburg which is responsible for the ad and thus the winner of South Africa's first Grand LIA. Bizcommunity.com apologises for the error.
