HIV and STI awareness
Although much has been exhausted about issues of HIV, the prevalence of the disease does not correspond with the knowledge and awareness that people claim to have acquired. As a result, as medical students at Nelson R Mandela school of medicine (UKZN) we have been allocated a task to educate the community on issues regarding HIV/AIDS and STIs.
The aim of the project is to allow us medical student to pratice what we have learned by going to a community of our choice to give an awareness talk.
We would present the following issues:
1.Myths and realities
2.Attitudes and perceptions
3.HIV and STI's prevention
4.Accepting, coping and living with HIV/AIDS
We choose to do it at Nkandla since it has one of the highest HIV infection. There is no reliable statistcs but the estimate is that one in four people is infected with HIV. Accessibility to medical care is limited due to the rural nature area. Nkandla only has two hospitals and eighteen clinics that need our assistance but with no financial help this may not be successful.
