Kaya FM 67km Relay for Mandela Day a resounding success
The target of 670 teams running 67km in honour of the 67 years that Mandela gave in service to South Africa was not only reached but exceeded as many corporates entered numerous teams. More than 1000 teams with over 11,000 keen runners participating in the Corporate Relay with a further 1,000 people taking part in the Fun Run.
On race day, Sunday, 14 July, South Africans came out in full force to support the initiative including local celebrities, the Miss Earth and Mr South Africa finalist, Sipho 'Hotstix Mabuse', Mzanzi Magic Soap Stars, 7de Laan Stars, Kabomo, and past and current Comrades winners.
Well organised and supported, the corporate relay was accompanied by a 1.67km Fun Run and all the activities pulled everyone together in a wonderful sense of camaraderie. Kaya FM's ambition of creating a fun-filled family day that unites people for a good cause while enjoying the great outdoors in a healthy way was fulfilled and the team is already planning ways to make it bigger and better next year.
"Kaya FM would like to thank everyone that came out to the Kaya FM 67km Relay in support of Tata Nelson Mandela. We hope that we have inspired all South African families to go out and do their 67 minutes of goodwill on Mandela Day", said Greg Maloka, MD at Kaya FM.
Green dominated the podium with Nedbank Running Club taking top honours in both the Men's and Women's open team categories (3:41 and 4:31 respectively) while the Randburg Harriers took the Mixed category. Within the Corporate Categories Sanjo Construction won the Men's category, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) the Women's category and Sibanye Gold the top Mixed Team.
Proceeds from the day will be going towards the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory education projects. Here disadvantaged primary schools receive beautifully and well-equipped refurbished shipment container libraries that create a culture of reading and help to combat illiteracy in South Africa.
After prize giving The Soil & The Muffinz entertained the crowds for the afternoon.
