Online radio show for music industry

Industry information portal Music Industry Online earlier this month launched MIO Radio, a fortnightly half-hour podcast with music industry insights, news, interviews and the best in South African music. The show will also cover contemporary issues and give a voice to the music business and its personalities.

‘‘The idea behind MIO Radio is to expose what we do and to keep up with new media trends. With the creation of MIO Radio, we’re hoping to engage in an entirely new way with our readership,’’ explains Josh Adler, Music Industry Online publisher.

The podcast launched on www.mio.co.za on 14 March 2007 and the concept and format are the result of the editorial team’s creativity and energy after months of preparation.

The show is anchored by MIO journalists Phathu Ratshilumela and Taryn-Lee Biggar. Both offer on-air styles that have given a new outlet for their already significant contributions to music journalism in South Africa, according to MIO.

Their network of contacts and grasp of the South African music sector, along with input from MIO editor Richard Rumney and other staff writers and contributors, will ensure the quality content MIO readers have come to expect will carry through to the new medium.

To ensure that as many people as possible have access to the shows, a number of formats are available to allow listeners to stream the shows directly from the MIO website, or download them to their computers or iPods. Large effort and technical resources have been used to ensure that the technical standards of the radio show in terms of production and distribution set the bar high for others in the sector to follow.

MIO’s mandate is to provide a catalyst for music industry growth in SA by freely sharing resources and information and it reports over 10 000 subscribers and monthly readership figures of over 30 000.

Concludes MIO editor Richard Rumney, ‘‘Online radio is the next frontier for us, as we take the publication to the next level for our readers and listeners.’’
