Local celeb launches #DignityDrive to collect sanitary products for young girls

In celebration of his 30th birthday, local TV personality, Siv Ngesi has opted out of a birthday bash and instead is asking South Africans to do a little good by donating much-needed sanitary products for girls who cannot afford them.

“I am calling on all companies and individuals to drop off pads, tampons and reusable moon cups at the Fire and Ice Hotel in Cape Town on 9 December from 12pm-7pm. I will also personally collect any items from donors who cannot make it into town,” said Ngesi.

Millions of girls in South Africa cannot afford sanitary pads or other products used during menstruation, with many girls and young women being left to ‘make a plan’ by using old rags and even socks. Some girls feel that they are left with no choice but to skip school during menstruation, because they cannot afford sanitary wear. In some instances, some schools are supplied with sanitary pads supplied through NGO and government programmes, but these do not meet the full demand.

“We also need to consider that, as we come to the end of the year, many girls will spend the December break with no access to sanitary pads, as they will not be at school. Let us help girls in need to enjoy their school holidays with dignity, where they do not have to worry about where they will find resources to buy pads.”

All sanitary products collected will be distributed to school going girls and young women through associated partners. To volunteer as a drop-off point outside of Cape Town, email az.oc.aidemmaj@ssej.
