Charity events, bursaries offer students media opportunities
Two charity events, the inaugural CNBC Africa Corporate Golf Challenge and the AMASA party, will raise funds for media students and the SABC Education and The National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa (NEMISA) are offering R2 000 000 in bursaries for electronic media students.
SABC openings
SABC Education is always looking for opportunities to assist learners in making a success of their career and the NEMISA partnership offers opportunities for students interested in a career in electronic media for studies in animation, graphic design, television and radio production.
The Graphic Design Diploma and Animation Diploma are three year programmes and NEMISA also offers the National Certificate in Radio Production. NEMISA has been training young people from diverse backgrounds since 2000, starting with training students on a fulltime basis in the areas of television and radio production, with just under 40 students a year. The students primarily came from disadvantaged backgrounds with emphasis on women, who made up at least 60% of the student population. It now produces more than 870 graduates a year in accredited MAPPP SETA programmes.
Closing date for applications is 30 September 2011. For more, go to www.nemisa.co.za or www.sabceducation.co.za.
Golf challenge funds student
The CNBC Africa Corporate Golf Challenge will be held at the Lost City Golf Course on 18 September 2011 and is part of a fund-raising programme to enable a young person from a previously disadvantaged background to study commerce and media or business journalism.
"All the participating companies will be winners because the proceeds will go to the ABN Education Trust," says Gary Alfonso group MD of ABN Media Holdings. "The trust, founded by Rakesh Wahi, fits in well with our strategy to develop and advance business journalism standards across Africa."
Participating companies include Nedbank, Telkom, Eskom, the IDC and Transnet. For more, go to www.abndigital.com.
Ghoul of a party
The AMASA party, which raises funds for the AMASA Learnership programme, will be held at Thatchers in Lonehill, Sandton on Thursday 27 October 2011 with a Halloween theme. AMASA also asks each individual attending to donate gifts in the form of children's toys which are delivered to the Little Switzerland Children's Home in time for Christmas each year.
