He was speaking to delegates attending the Discovery Invest Leadership Summit held in Johannesburg last week. He says that 'green' jobs are not a myth and they provide an opportunity for South Africa - and other countries - to help resolve the unemployment issues.
However Gore points out that such an initiative requires both leadership and vision and that companies must move away from the short-sighted vision of immediate profits to a longer-term vision that will allow for investments in green initiatives and the creation of jobs.
Referring to widespread pollution, Gore points out that 90-million tons of gases are released into the atmosphere every year and as much as 20% of those gases will still be around 20 000 years from now.
His views are echoed by the chief executive of the Carbon War Room, Jigar Shah who says that the key to sustained economic recovery and long-term job growth lies in building infrastructure and urged governments, corporations, entrepreneurs and investors to work together to resolve the many environmental and social problems affecting developing countries.
The Carbon War Room is a non-profit organisation that harnesses the power of entrepreneurs to implement solutions to climate change in a bid to create a post-carbon economy.
