This comes after reports published earlier this year stated that the toy retailer's South African franchise operator Ensolor ran into financial difficulties and was put into business rescue, resulting in two store closures in Gauteng.
“We are very excited to confirm that the Hamleys brand will remain in South Africa. We are not just a toy store. We have a greater purpose, and the reason for our continued existence is because we sell fun, magic and entertainment, bringing smiles and joy to the faces of children and adults alike,” said Derek Kohler, Hamleys interim CEO.
The 259-year-old toy brand arrived in South Africa in 2015, offering a retail experience that prioritises play and encourages customers to engage with the products.
“We also have growth plans for the brand and are excited to be opening a store in the newly revamped and expanded Fourways Mall later in the year. The store will feature all the magical elements for which the brand is renowned along with some added first of its kind, new and innovative interactive play areas,” added Kohler.
Hamleys also announced in the statement that it will be extending its exclusive product ranges.
