Pfizer was one of 383 Fortune 500 companies -- and one of nine in the chemical and pharmaceutical sector -- named in the CDLI, a prestigious honor roll for global corporations addressing the challenges of climate change.
“Pfizer is a leader among its peers through its voluntary reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and commitment to renewable energy,” CDP Chief Executive Paul Dickinson said. “Good corporate governance in respect of climate change disclosure will inevitably reap its rewards. As carbon regulation increases, those companies that have implemented climate change related strategies are clearly going to be in a far better position to meet the challenge of higher carbon prices than companies that have procrastinated. Good disclosure practices are synonymous with good management.”

“Our Energy and Climate Change program addresses sustainability through our conservation guidelines, energy efficient projects, emission reduction goals, and green buildings. Energy teams and colleagues at Pfizer facilities around the world completed more than 430 conservation-related projects during 2007, an increase of 40 projects over the previous year, and a commendable achievement, demonstrating our commitment to program advancement,” said Steve Brooks, vice president of Global Environment Health & Safety for Pfizer.
Pfizer has had a company standard requiring the conservation of energy and reduction of greenhouse gases since 1996. In 2002, Pfizer became a charter member of the Climate Leaders Program, a partnership between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and industry that aims to develop long-term, comprehensive climate change strategies and sets greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals. As a Climate Leader, Pfizer established a company-wide intensity goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 35 percent per million dollars of revenue and most recently, a second generation CO2 goal that targets a 20% reduction on an absolute basis by 2012. The company is also evaluating and implementing a number of projects that generate electricity from clean energy sources.
