Eight-month-old Elijah was apparently born with a rare deadly disease called total intestinal atresia, which prevented him from eating.
The baby boy is from the small Adirondack village in Lewis, Essex County, 170km north of Albany; he has a brother age five and a sister age three.
Elijah is expected to undergo rehabilitation and start to learn to eat next week.
