Business rallies in support of Child Abuse Rescue Centres

Variety Club, the international children’s charity and represented in South Africa by a group of corporate and business companies (including the likes of Ster Kinekor, African Media Entertainment, Kagiso Media, Primedia, Nu Metro, MNET, Standard Bank, Sun International, SAA and Nando’s), is bringing out legendary singing sensation Dionne Warwick and will be hosting public concerts and a corporate "performance privée" banquet aimed at businesses, to help raise funds for their Child Abuse Rescue Centres.

The board members of Variety Club, which is one of 54 Variety Clubs worldwide, believe that raising money for worthwhile causes can be combined with exceptional entertainment and have put their weight behind the project. Concerts are to be held in Johannesburg on 28 August and in Cape Town on 30 August. The "performance privée" banquet will be held on 27 August 2002 at Carnival City.

Sponsoring the Dionne Warwick Tour are Variety Club Board members Sun International and Carnival City, SAA and Standard Bank. Dionne Warwick, who earlier this year performed at the 50th Anniversary of Variety Club in London, agreed to launch her 40th Anniversary Tour in South Africa and raise funds for a cause that is close to her heart.

Says Toni Gomes, Executive Director of Variety Club, "The Dionne Warwick "performance privee" is a unique opportunity to combine business, charity and pleasure. Companies wanting to entertain their top clients can book tables at R10,000 per table (or R2 000 per couple), enjoy a sumptuous banquet and be entertained by the legendary Dionne who is currently on her 40th Anniversary World Tour. All proceeds of the evening will be used to establish four Child Abuse Rescue Centres throughout the country."

Known as the "artist who bridged the gap", Dionne Warwick's music transcends race, culture and musical boundaries, a soulful blend of pop, gospel and R & B. She became the first black female singer to achieve international stardom and was the first black female performer to appear before the Queen at the Royal Command Performance in 1968. From her first hit "Anyone who had a Heart" to the memorable Burt Bacharach hits "Do You Know the Way to San Jose", This Girl's in Love With You", "I'll never Fall in Love Again" and "Alphie", Dionne remains a legend of our time.

Variety Club is extremely grateful to Dionne Warwick for agreeing to perform in South Africa and for her involvement in the Child Abuse Rescue Centres. The Board of Variety Club urges all corporate companies to support this worthy cause and celebrate with Dionne her 40 years in showbusiness.
