Senior Designer

Job description:

Uphondo Lwe Nyathi has an exciting opportunity available for an Interior Designer to join our innovative and dynamic team.

Purpose of the role:
The mid-level/ senior interior designer will play a pivotal role in developing detailed drawing packages and coordinating with suppliers, contractors, and consultants. The Designer will be responsible for translating design concepts into accurate and executable documentation, with a particular focus on shop fitting, joinery detailing, and technical construction drawings.

Key performance areas: The designer will report to the department leads in performing their duties in-office.

Role and responsibilities

• Develop comprehensive drawing packs including plans, elevations, sections, and detailed joinery/shopfitting drawings.
• Produce technical documentation in compliance with building codes, industry standards, and project requirements.
• Collaborate with senior designers and project leads during design development and documentation stages.
• Liaise with contractors, suppliers, and fabricators to ensure design intent is maintained through production and installation.
• Participate in site visits to assess progress and address any technical issues that may arise during construction.
• Work with the design team to solve spatial and technical challenges creatively and efficiently.
• Support in FF&E specification where required.

Qualifications and experience:

• Graduate to senior position with an extensive knowledge in technical drawings
• Understanding of technical design within the retail & Commercial environment
• Experience working with relevant software - AutoCAD & Revit a plus
• Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
• Experience engaging with clients and incorporating direction into completion of task
• Ability to manage time and pressure

Skills and attributes:

• 4–6 years of relevant professional experience in commercial or retail interior design.
• Proficient in AutoCAD and/or Revit; experience with Twin-motion, Adobe Creative Suite, and other relevant software is advantageous.
• Strong experience in producing shopfitting details, joinery drawings, and technical documentation.
• Solid understanding of construction methods, materials, and detailing.
• Ability to interpret and produce complex technical drawings to a high standard.
• Strong communication and coordination skills.
• Excellent attention to detail and a proactive, solution-oriented mindset.

Preferred qualifications (nice to have):

• Familiarity with local building regulations and codes.
• On-site experience during fit-out or construction phases.
• Background in retail, hospitality, or branded environments.
• Strong conceptual design capabilities.
