Media 2012: Never a dull moment There's a Chinese curse that goes something along the lines of "May you live in interesting times", and 2012 has certainly been that for the media industry in South Africa. As Gill Moodie writes, 2012 hasn't had a dull moment. Surf's up... and Michael Saylor, chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer of MicroStrategy and author of The Mobile Wave: How Mobile Intelligence will Change Everything, says you'd better be ready to ride the mobile wave, because, he says "it is going to sweep through and obliterate billions of jobs and millions of small businesses and that's going to be viewed with trepidation by politicians, unions and businessmen, all three, because they're going to see their world disrupted. But at the same time, it opens up the possibility for three or four billion people in the underclass to get a PhD" It's time to bury the old bag... not the person you might be thinking of, but the portfolio bag. Carmen Schaefer and Dr Carla Enslin reckon that instead of boring prospective employers, job candidates need to think outside of the ... bag ... and not waste any time crying over its demise. Some overseas research finds that online retailers need to boost their website performance if they want to retain customers. A Riverbed study finds that 61% of participants would form a negative opinion of the brand if the website performs poorly. Is your target the youth?
