Identifying the ROT

Five years later, thanks to a High Court review, the FXI has another chance to take on the SABC for allegedly blacklisting certain political commentators and journalists in 2006. Appearing before the Complaints and Compliance Committee (CCC), which dismissed the case in 2007 claiming no jurisdiction over the matter, round two will take place this week.

According to Athar Naser, it's out with traditional advertising messages, and in with content marketing. Naser believes content analysis is an essential part of content marketing, and a good place to start is by identifying the ROT... an apt acronym, if ever I heard one.

Zimkhitha Mqutheni feels businesses need to shift their focus from external communications to internal communications and create a happier working environment for their number one brand ambassadors - their employees. Now there's no need to go Google and purchase a pinball machine for the staff playroom; Mqutheni believes the plan does not have to be expensive at all. (Though a pinball machine never hurt anyone...)

Need to know how search marketing, SEO and SMO can be used to improve your company's online visibility? Listen to Biz Takeouts Podcast 45: Search marketing.

Lastly, November / December will see the last edition of Stuff SA, as Times Media's license to publish the magazine was not renewed. Look out for a new mag from the publishing house in early 2013.

What is content marketing?
[Athar Naser] Content marketing is the latest buzzword in the digital marketing sphere. It's a solution to connecting with today's savvy consumer who has become very good at tuning out media noise they're not interested in. Traditional advertising is no longer effective and rather than telling the consumer to "buy now", brands should be telling the consumer what they want to know. Read more >>

Content analysis explained
[Athar Naser] Traditional advertising messages are no longer effective. To capture the attention of a consumer that is expert at tuning out "buy now" media messages, you need to offer them something they want. This is where content marketing, the latest buzzword in the digital marketing sphere, comes in. Read more >>

Engage at every stage: New marketing mandate
The desire to engage at every stage of the customer lifecycle has reportedly been the unrealised goal of many marketers, but this may no longer be the case. Expanding your brand across Africa
[Nonye Mpho Omotola] Many companies talk about expanding into Africa. It's the next obvious frontier. However, it would be wrong to assume that a week's visit to Nigeria for example, with a population of over 160 million and 350 ethnic groups with twelve languages, will give you a true understanding of how to operate your brand in that market. Direct marketing

Is your direct marketing provider accredited?
One of the biggest threats to the direct marketing industry is the apparent ease with which companies gain access to digital databases. RamsayMedia stays true to 360 degree strategy
[Gill Moodie: @grubstreetSA] One often gets the sense that some print-media companies' response to the dramatic changes in the industry amounts to little more than putting out fires - rather than crafting a strategy for the future.
