Awards season has officially opened! Actually, I think there are very few months of the year in which there aren't any awards events. And since Bizcommunity.com covers so many different but related industries, there's always a different circle of professionals 'robustly debating' the worth and value of awards. So congrats to the latest rounds of winners for the Diageo Marketing Brilliance Awards (last Wednesday night in the UK), Creative Circle Ad of the Year Awards (last Thursday night), the MK Awards (Friday night), the National Press Club Newsmakers of the Year Awards (my Twitter stream got particularly snippy on Friday night), and the PRISMs last night (and to Meropa's Peter Mann for stimulating some intelligent debate on Biz for a change). By the way, if you were at the PRISMs last night or following tweets, remember that erratum about Gullan & Gullan and Ogilvy PR Cape Town in connection with one of the Carling Black Label campaigns? That insertion was an error: Ogilvy PR did indeed enter "Be the Coach" in Digital Media Relations (page 25) and Gullan & Gullan the same campaign in Integration of Traditional & New Media (page 31). In other news, expect more radio lineups to be announced this week; there's been more restructuring at Media24 Magazines; Boardmans and Red Square have gone to Ireland/Davenport and Edcon Group Cellular to Promise; the South African division of Irish publishing group Independent News & Media is reporting further losses in revenue; Graham Pfuhl has resurfaced, this time at Adtherapy; and another new ad agency has made its appearance, Old Friends Young Talent, aiming to help transform the ad industry from the bottom up. In terms of Biz contributors, the intrepid trigger/isobar bloggers Karin Botta and Uno de Waal have written about the top five things learned at SxSW and should one go in 2013; Anthony Duke aka Duke Nukem, I've decided, hasn't minced his words in declaring that radio is losing its intelligence ( part I and part II) ahead of his third stint of judging the MTN Radio Awards (yes, the a-word once again); and Mongezi Mtati has written further about two trends he identified earlier this year: going beyond a social media presence and the rise of influencer engagement. And for those of you who may have lost the plot on the long-running saga of the Protection of (State) Information Bill and the NCOP public hearings, the beef's in Gill Moodie's latest column. Hou vas! Simone Puterman ( @SimoneBiz) Managing editorPS The latest Ornico Ad Showcase features TV ads for Red Bull, Capitec, Castle Lite, Bokomo Weet-Bix and Vodacom, and radio ads for Hunter's Dry, Audi A4, Revite, Eskom and Hansa Pilsner. PPS Welcome to 123RF which has just opened a press office on Bizcommunity Marketing & Media South Africa! Responses to this column welcomed in our editor's column archive. Please send all South African marketing and media news to marketingnews@bizcommunity.com, opinion pieces to contributors-marketing@bizcommunity.com and international news to internationalnews@bizcommunity.com. [Chris Moerdyk: @chrismoerdyk] I keep thinking about that cabinet minister who, a few weeks ago, said that e-tolls wouldn't hurt the poor because the rich would pay for it all. What he didn't realise of course, was that when the rich pay the tolls, they put it on their expense accounts or add it to their truck fleet operating costs and eventually pass it on to the consumer. Including the poor consumer. Read more >>

[Mongezi Mtati] To date, there are two brands in particular, Absolut and Nike, which have hit the ground running when it comes to going beyond a social media presence and influencer engagement, making it difficult for challenger brands to catch up and maintain the pace. [Herman Manson: @marklives] Often, when speaking to agency MDs and creative directors from many of the traditional flagships of South African advertising, the name of some specialist below-the-line agency would come up, and the conversation, flowing so easily around the currents of industry gossip but moments before, would grind to a halt. [trigger/isobar goes to SxSW] Uno de Waal: SxSW is a crazy place - it's a jam-packed time filled with an insane amount of information and you won't take in everything within five days. [trigger/isobar goes to SxSW] Karin Botta: Digital marketing is a lot more than an entertaining Facebook tab, some cute tweets, or a campaign that relies solely on user-generated content. It's more dynamic, involves real people, but mostly needs to be as simple as possible. It was this, and the next five ideas, that had the biggest impact upon me during my time at SxSW in Austin last week. Read more >>

[Anthony Duke] Next week I start listening to entrants in the MTN Radio Awards for the third year. "Social Media puts the "public" into PR and the "market" into marketing. (via Famous Bloggers)" - Chris Brogan "1% of repeat purchases are made out of indifference and not out of loyalty. (via Small Biz CRM)" - Industry analysts "Facebook is to 2007 as Twitter is to 2009. It's the most open communication platform out there. (via Neatorama)" - Roger Kondrat "Successful CRM is about competing in the relationship dimension. Not as an alternative to having a competitive product or reasonable price- but as a differentiator. If your competitors are doing the same thing you are (as they generally are), product and price won't give you a long-term, sustainable competitive advantage. But if you can get an edge based on how customers feel about your company, it's a much stickier--sustainable--relationship over the long haul. (via Small Biz CRM)" - Bob Thompson
