Self-regulation, regulation or oversight? Will the News of the World scandal have any relevance for South Africa's media? Will there be any impact on our media landscape? Media and marketing analyst Chris Moerdyk, Mail & Guardian editor Nic Dawes writing in the Guardian and M&G news editor Drew Forrester continue the debate, with Moerdyk now proposing that self-regulation (and the new Press Freedom Commission) won't work now and suggesting that an independent media oversight structure may. In the meantime, on Saturday, 23 July 2011, Julius Malema failed to obtain an interdict in the South Gauteng High Court against City Press publishing details yesterday of his family trust fund. Then the ANC Youth League called a media conference today and, oh boy, what was said during that... The Protection of Information Bill hearings have also resumed. On the advertising side, the remaining Loeries finalists have been released, and time is flying once again in the latest touching Allan Gray ad from KingJames. Don't forget to listen to the latest Biz Takeouts podcast from the Bizcommunity.com/Chai FM Media & Marketing radio show! Keep warm! [Chris Moerdyk: @chrismoerdyk] Fall-out from the phone hacking scandal in the UK has not yet spread abroad in any significant way but, like that massive tide of flotsam from the Japanese tsunami, it might take a few years to find its way ashore, and when it does, it will create an enormous mess. [Issa Sikiti da Silva: @sikitimedia] "The kind of world we live in today is a landscape of several pieces of legislation, policy, case laws, regulations and self-regulation, industry codes and constitutional aspects, which must not be violated at any cost," cautions Pria Chetty, IT lawyer, academic and Chetty Law founder. [John Beale] With another social network being launched by Google, the leader in search and most things Internet, the world is abuzz (sorry) with what Google+ means. [Paul Williams] If my dad could see me now, he'd do as he always did in every situation: shake his head in despair. He'd say, with the disdain and disbelief of someone facing incredulous odds, "You've landed with your bum in the butter again... and I don't know how you do it." Truth is, no-one knows... it just happens... like advertising. At last, I get to write my own column, and on advertising nogal! Read more >>

[Issa Sikiti da Silva: @sikitimedia] Sunday World newspaper has been told by the Nelson Mandela family and the SABC to issue a public apology or face prosecution in a court of law. [Herman Manson: @marklives] Kim Reid, diplomatically perhaps, doesn't care what the competition of his online retail venture, Takealot.com, is up to.
