Goodbye 2010: when truth was stranger than fiction

Can you believe it? 2010 is almost done and dusted, and what a year it has been, a year of truth being stranger than fiction!

In what has turned out to be a bumper last newsletter of the year - far more so than I ever expected - Bizcommunity.com columnists take a trip down memory lane with various retrospectives, as well as some forecasts for the year to come - but if you really want to find out about upcoming trends, tune back in from Monday, 10 January 2011, when we resume newsletters and commence with our annual Biz Trends Reports series.

In the meantime, news (albeit on a much smaller scale) will still continue to be posted on Bizcommunity and its various portals during the festive season, except for when our offices are completely shut between Christmas and New Year's Day.

My heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the entire biz team - editorial, support, admin, design, production, IT, sales and HR - and to the entire biz community of readers, columnists, journalists, contributors, bloggers, media partners, content partners, PROs (or PRs, if you insist), clients, newsmakers, commentators (James Blond, whoever and wherever you are, you get my vote for the funniest comments), photographers, videographers and anyone else who's contributed in any way: without you all, there is no Bizcommunity.

Take care over the festive season and we look forward to an exciting 2011, in which we celebrate our 10th birthday of growing from strength to strength!

With love from the biz team

Geseënde Geesfees!

Special focus on media freedom

SA's 'flawed' legislation, proposals threaten human rights - MMA
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] South Africa's 'fragile' freedom of expression, free flow of information, and media liberties and independence were further shaken this year by a series of what critics call 'flawed' and 'authoritarian' legislation and proposals. As the world commemorated International Human Rights Day last week, Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) called on Government to uphold the spirit of the Constitution and human rights in any new legislation and statutory bodies established. Learn from Wikileaks, Right2Know tells SA government
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] The South African government has been told to learn lessons from the Wikileaks saga and stop messing around with the game of secrecy, as it could have terrible consequences if it backfires. "The leaking of secret diplomatic correspondence by Wikileaks serves as a warning to all who wish to hide information from the public," Right2Know campaign national coordinator Mark Weinberg said in a statement yesterday, Thursday, 9 December 2010. Constitutional Court looms for ultimate Secrecy Bill battle
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] The ultimate battle over the Protection of Information Bill is certainly to be fought at the Constitutional Court next year if Government still maintains that secrecy is the essential lubricant of democracy. Lawmakers will reconvene in January 2011 to decide on the final draft of the 'dictatorial' legislation, which critics say will severely affect journalists, researchers, various lobby groups, authors and information advocates. Media awards 2010: we fight for freedom and farce
[Gill Moodie: @grubstreetSA] 2010 proved to be a year of great drama (and farce) for the media industry in South Africa. Who would have thought that 16 years after the dawn of democracy that journalists would be pulling together to fight for media freedom? But there were also many moments of high comedy, huge stories to wrestle with, the 2010 FIFA World Cup, surprises, interesting moves, winners and losers. Here're my thoughts on who's top of the pops of the media industry this year. Read more >>
