Saxenburg launches 2005 Private Collections
Internationally acclaimed wine producer, Saxenburg, launched its 2005 Private Collections at a prestigious event which took place on the wine estate during April 2008. The 2005 Private Collections include the 2005 vintages of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, as well as red wine blends branded as the Guinea Fowl selection. Also presented at the formal wine-tasting were the 2007 Private Collections of Saxenburg Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, as well as the Guinea Fowl Rosé 2007 and Guinea Fowl Chenin/Viognier 2007.
Saxenburg Cellar Master and Winegrower Nico van der Merwe says that extreme climatic conditions prevail worldwide, including the Western Cape. “For those unaware, the 2000 season was the hottest in more than 100 years and the 2005 season was the driest in more than 100 years in the Cape. I believe that most of the farmers know by now how to manage irrigation water. So the situation was tough and forced us to manipulate the yields, which lead to lower production rate per hectare.”
He says that on the positive side the crop was smaller, which “helped to stabilise the surplus wine situation”. He reports that good rainfall (90mm) was received during the previous April, which kept the vineyards in good shape.
Van der Merwe says that his permanent presence at Saxenburg throughout the year gives him enough time to judge the entire growth season, which assists with making the final selection. “It also gives me enough time to re-think certain wines and styles so that we're delivering the best possible product.” He added that during the next 18 months Saxenburg will follow some of these selections and blends, and the really good wines will be added to their portfolio.
